Joseph Uzumcu specialises in true made-to-measure tailoring – where every suit is cut to your exact measurements, crafted in-house and finished with precision down to the final stitch
Throughout history the suit has become a symbol of power, authority and resourcefulness. There is nothing more appealing than a man in a well-fitted suit, which has been proven by the recent resurgence in tailoring. Modern suits merge a more casual and versatile fit with the traditional cut of yesteryear, placing an emphasis on comfort and style. This is exactly what you will find when visiting the experienced and dependable Joseph Uzumcu.
Getting his start working in the Bazaars of his hometown of Istanbul, Turkey, Joseph landed in Australia in the ‘80s. He started his tailoring business six years later, introducing Adelaide to a high-quality level of tailoring not seen before.
The fashion may have changed over the decades, but Joseph’s commitment to his customers has never wavered. “We specialise in customer service,” he says proudly. “We don’t specialise in suits, jackets, shoes, denim… What we specialise in is what customers need. We provide the expertise of what men need.”
Peruse the carefully curated racks at Joseph Uzumcu’s Gawler Place store and be greeted by not only knowledgeable and friendly staff, but arguably the largest selection of menswear the CBD has to offer. Whether you’re after a three-piece suit for a wedding, business attire for that new job you’re starting or a casual outfit for date night, Joseph Uzumcu has you covered. Prestigious brands line the racks, including Hugo Boss, Tombolini and Ted Baker, but if it’s Italian tradition you’re after, look no further than Canali.
Canali suits exude timeless Italian luxury with a contemporary fit and superior fabrics. For more than 85 years, Canali have been at the forefront of sartorial showpieces, merging Italian culture and history with the comfy elegance of their impeccable wool, silk and linen suits. Carrying the biggest range of Canali suits in Adelaide, Joseph Uzumcu embodies the same values and traditions as the premium brand.
Ready-to-wear suits are available for those who want a grab something off the racks and walk out the door confident with their purchase, but if you want a suit with a personal touch, look no further than Joseph Uzumcu’s made-to-measure service. Pick a style and shape that appeals and your in-store tailor will advise on the best fit and design and happily discuss everything from the choice of fabric to the size of the buttons and lapels. After your measurements are taken, the crew will get to crafting the first iteration of your suit.
A second fitting allows for any size adjustments, giving you the chance to make minor changes. Once the necessary alterations have been made, there’s one final fitting where you can try on the finished suit and marvel at the expert craftsmanship before leaving as a proud owner of a custom-tailored Joseph Uzumcu suit.
The staff at Joseph Uzumcu are well-trained and have an eye for detail, making sure your suit is not only of the highest quality, but comes with service to match. Open seven days a week, Joseph Uzumcu is your one-stop store for all your tailoring needs.

Wool, Silk, Cashmere
The Holy Trinity of luxury fabrics, each bringing its own elegance: warmth, sheen and softness tailored to perfectio
WOOL
Wool is the king of fabrics and the most common material used for crafting suits. Durable, comfortable and versatile, it’s generally found in two varieties: woollen and worsted. Woollen suits are thick and heavy due to the individual layering of each fibre, while worsted suits are smooth and softer, with an edge of toughness.
Suits made from wool are classified by “Super” numbers representing the fineness of the wool fibres used in the suits’ creation, not the thread count, as many suspect. The average suit is S120, which is great for day-to-day use, but if you’re after an outfit with a more luxurious appeal, aim for S150. The perfect example of this is the Italian brand Canali. Many of the company’s suits are S150, resulting in a refined design offering timeless European charm that won’t break the bank.
Silk
If high-end fashion is the name of your game, get yourself a supple silk number. Light and breezy, wearing a silk suit is comparable to being naked; such is the breathability and weightlessness that comes with wearing silk.
Although rarely made from 100 per cent silk (more often than not, they are a composite of silk and worsted wool), silk suits are great for all seasons, keeping you toasty during the colder months and as fresh as a daisy during summer. Incredibly smooth, breathable and soft to the touch, silk suits fit the body effortlessly and have a natural sheen that radiates, adding to the luxurious feel of the suit.
Cashmere
If money is no concern, then you can’t go past cashmere. A type of wool known for its soft touch and warmth, cashmere is derived from the cashmere goat that originally thrived in the Himalayan region of Kashmir.
The embodiment of opulence, cashmere offers a sophisticated edge to any outfit. The versatile material is easy to maintain and can be worn in any season, but cashmere makes for a high-quality choice during winter, with the fabric a practical and elegant choice for the colder months.
