Fisher Kitchens shows how passion, planning and people-first values can turn a hands-on craft into a sustainable modern business.

Founded in 2014 by husband-and-wife team Teagan and Braydn Fisher in their backyard shed, Fisher Kitchens is a South Australian-based cabinetry business driven by a passion for creating beautiful, functional spaces that feel like home. The origins of the business are rooted in Braydn’s passion for creating things with his own hands.

Braydn’s always had a passion for cabinetry and design, and starting our own business felt like the natural way to build something that reflected that craft and pride in the detail,” explains Teagan. “I’m not the creative one. I’m more about the organisation, numbers and structure, but that’s what makes us a great team. While Braydn brings the design vision to life, I make sure the systems and processes behind the scenes keep everything running smoothly.”

Both of the Fishers grew up in small family businesses, with Braydn’s parents involved in farming and Teagan’s family running a fruit orchard. They both understood the long hours and hard work required to start their own business, but also knew how rewarding it would be to build something “from the ground up” with “a shared goal to create spaces people genuinely love coming home to.”

In just over a decade, Fisher Kitchens has grown into a thriving business wth a client-first focus. Making sure not to expand too fast, Fisher Kitchens has grown steadily over the years, reaching out to professional coaches and mentors over the journey to provide feedback and help keep the business grounded and accountable. But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing.

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that if you want your business to actually grow, you need to make time to work on it, not just in it,” says Teagan. “In the early days, Braydn was on the tools constantly – quoting, installing, managing jobs, and it was easy to get caught up in the day-to-day. But growth only really started to happen once we stepped back a little and put proper time into planning, systems, and the bigger picture.

“It’s not always easy, because as small business owners, you wear so many hats, but we’ve learned that setting aside space to think strategically, review goals, and invest in your team pays off in the long run. It’s what helps the business move forward rather than just keep up.”

Motivated by both personal values and a growing interest from clients, Teagan and Braydn joined the Small Business Sustainability Support Program, delivered by 2XE. Through workshops, consultations, and on-site assessments, they gained valuable insights into reducing their carbon footprint and improving energy efficiency. Sustainability has become a key pillar of their business.

People are far more conscious now about where things are made and how they’re made,” explains Teagan. “Our clients care about supporting local manufacturing, reducing waste and choosing quality materials that last, and so do we. It’s pushed us to look at our own processes and think about how we can do things better. It’s about running a business that reflects the values of the people we work with and the community we’re part of.”

One major outcome of the Small Business Sustainability Support Program has been their decision to install solar panels at their manufacturing site – an investment that not only aligns with their values but also reduces overheads in the long run.

“As manufacturers, we use a huge amount of energy every day to keep the workshop running,” Teagab. “Installing solar panels and a battery system was a practical and meaningful way for us to reduce both our overheads and environmental impact.

“By generating and storing our own power, we’re far less reliant on traditional coal-based energy sources. It means we can run the business more efficiently, reduce our carbon emissions, and have greater control over our energy use, which is a big step forward in making our operations more sustainable. It’s one of those decisions that just makes sense. It’s good for the environment and good for business.”

As for the future of Fisher Kitchens?

“Looking ahead, we’d love to see Fisher Kitchens grow beyond just the two of us to become a destination workplace for talented, passionate people who share our values,” says Teagan.

“We’ve built a really strong foundation over the past decade, and now it’s about continuing to create opportunities for our team and shaping a business that people are proud to be part of. We want Fisher Kitchens to be known not just for the quality of our cabinetry, but for the culture behind it, a place where people feel valued, supported, and inspired to do their best work.

“That’s the future we’re working towards: steady growth, great people, and continuing to create beautiful spaces our clients can’t wait to come home to.”
