Four Legs, One Purpose: Inside The World Of IGP

OzcorpK9 founder Ryan King gives us an insight into the world of dog sports and how it connects owners with their pets.

When people ask what sport I follow, I usually disappoint them. I don’t live for AFL. I don’t follow the cricket. I don’t wear a team jersey. My sport has four legs. For more than two decades, I’ve competed in and supported International Gebrauchshund Pruefungn (IGP), an internationally recognised and world-renowned dog sport, formerly known as Schutzhund and IPO.

It’s a triathlon for working dogs consisting of three phases: tracking, obedience and protection. It demands discipline from the handler, precision from the dog and courage from the team.

But beyond the scoreboard and titles, IGP holds a beauty many people never see. It is the beauty of partnership – a human and a dog moving with shared understanding, quiet communication, and complete trust in one another.

Tracking – Discipline of the Handler

There are no shortcuts in tracking. The dog works independently, 10 metres ahead, following the disturbed ground of footsteps laid hours earlier, committing to scent alone and indicating each article with precision.

But tracking reveals more about the handler than the dog. If you don’t put in the reps, you don’t get the result.

Tracking teaches patience and humility. It teaches that progress is built quietly, long before anyone sees the outcome. There is no applause. Just repetitive work done when no one is watching.

Obedience – Precision from the Dog

Obedience is high performance under pressure. It’s point-based, where the handler walks forward in a naturally neutral, composed stride. The dog gives total focus and commitment every step of the way. One verbal command. Full attention. Immediate, precise response.

Obedience is where the relationship between handler and dog becomes truly visible. There is nowhere to hide on the trial field. Just you and your teammate on the grass with every movement assessed.

Mastering this phase builds confidence, timing and learned communication. That is when true partnership is on display.

Protection – A True Test of Character

Protection is the ultimate test of control. To an outsider, it looks intense. It is a test of stability, courage, and clarity under real pressure.

The dog must engage with strength, release instantly on command, and remain clear-headed in high drive under highly distracting situations. The handler must stay calm, fair, and precise.

When done correctly, it is one of the clearest demonstrations of trust you will ever experience. A powerful dog responding instantly to a single word. That level of connection is earned.

IGP is Only One Path

Across South Australia, there are many sports that owners and their dogs can compete in. Find a team of like-minded people and tap into that community.

For me, it started as a hobby and became a passion. Then it became a profession. What many don’t realise is how much a sport like this strengthens you mentally. It provides structure. It produces measurable progress. It creates community. It builds resilience. And when you return to the field, you return stronger.

When you find something that demands the best of you, something that challenges you, sharpens your standards and allows you to grow while giving value to others, it changes everything.

What starts as a hobby can become a profession. But more importantly, it becomes a purpose. And purpose is powerful. It gives men something to move towards, something to measure themselves against, something worth getting up early for. It replaces the grind with intention and turns effort into fulfilment.

Sport isn’t always played in stadiums. Sometimes your greatest teammate is waiting at the end of a leash.
