Something not quite right downstairs? MH Clinics provides safe treatment options for a range of penile conditions that might play on your mind

Men are generally pretty closed off when it comes to talking about their old fella. For some reason, whether it’s ego, the fear of humiliation or our inability to communicate the important stuff, talk of anything out of the ordinary below the belt is normally blacklisted, with many men preferring to ignore any issue until it’s too late.

What most men don’t realise is that the majority of penile conditions are non-dangerous and easily treatable.

“The vast majority of bumps or spots on the private parts are completely harmless,” explains MH Clinics Dr Matthew Holman. “In fact, many of the issues men come to see me about are simply normal anatomical variations rather than a disease or infection.”

These issues include normal pigmentary changes in the skin, small skin tags or other benign texture changes that can appear over time. “The conditions I see most commonly are Fordyce spots, pearly penile papules (PPP) and angiokeratoma of Fordyce,” says Matthew.

“These are all very common and medically harmless, but they can cause significant anxiety because they are often mistaken for sexually transmitted infections.”

Although something like PPP isn’t a disease or infection and has no long-term impact on your health, many men freak out when they see little bumps on their old fella. As Matthew mentioned, it’s easy to jump to conclusions and think you’ve picked up an STI after a big night out. But you shouldn’t stress. PPP is one of the most common conditions affecting the penis, according to the Cleveland Clinic, a non-profit multi-specialty academic medical centre, which estimates between 14 per cent and 48 per cent of the male population experience PPP during their lifetime.

While all these conditions are harmless and most men are comfortable with these normal variations and do not require treatment, they can cause anxiety and stress, with some men choosing to have them removed for peace of mind.

“In most cases, it’s not about physical discomfort. The conditions men commonly present with are usually completely harmless and don’t cause symptoms,” Matthew says. “What brings most men in is uncertainty and confidence. Many have noticed bumps or spots on their private parts and worry about what they might be, particularly whether they could be infectious. Others simply feel self-conscious about how the area looks, especially in intimate situations.”

He adds, “Once they understand that these conditions are benign, the anxiety usually disappears. What most men want at that point is a solution, and the good news is that these common concerns can, in most cases, be treated safely and very effectively with modern medical techniques.”

First Steps

If you happen to notice anything unusual, the first thing you should do is see your local GP. We know dropping your dacks in front of the doc is embarrassing, but it’s much better than missing something that could be a major health concern. And please don’t try home remedies.

There is a lot of misinformation floating about on the internet, with websites promoting unsafe DIY solutions, including things such as toothpaste and tea tree oil. There are also a lot of grifters trying to earn a dollar selling special creams and ointments that are only good for draining your bank balance.

“Dr Google can be helpful to a point, but it can also be very misleading,” says Matthew. “Many men understandably search online first if they notice something unusual on their private parts, but the problem is that image searches often show a wide range of related conditions rather than the exact condition someone actually has.

“This can easily create confusion. For example, when people search for Fordyce spots on the lips, images of cold sores often appear, even though they are completely different things. The same happens with bumps on the private parts, where harmless conditions such as Fordyce spots or PPP can be mistaken online for infections.”

One of the most concerning home remedies is people attempting to remove lesions themselves using chemicals, like strong acid. “These types of products were never designed for use on sensitive areas of the body. Not only do these approaches rarely work, but they can easily lead to irritation, scarring, or pigmentation changes that are far more difficult to treat than the original concern,” says Matthew.

The only way to truly know what is wrong with you is by seeing a doctor, and if needed, being treated in a controlled way without unnecessary risk to your private parts.

Treatment Options

After being diagnosed, most men feel a sense of relief and can get on with life, but for some, it can still impact their confidence or the way they feel about their body. No need to worry, as there are several safe and effective treatment options available at respected institutions such as MH Clinics.

Cold Plasma: If you want a modern and effective non-surgical treatment option, look no further. This procedure uses cold plasma to target each papule while protecting nearby tissue. This is a great choice for gently treating superficial lesions by ablating the surface layer of skin without the heat associated with ablative lasers. This makes it highly controllable and generally has few side effects or scarring.

Radiofrequency: Micro-insulated needle radiofrequency allows very precise treatment of deeper structures within the skin while protecting the surrounding tissue. Similar to cold plasma, this procedure can achieve good results with generally minimal downtime and low risk of side effects. Using the appropriate technology for each presentation allows treatment to be extremely precise and safe while aiming for good cosmetic outcomes.

Why Professional Treatment Works Best

Don’t go half-cocked and try some quick fix you found on the internet. The safest way to assess and treat these conditions is to ensure the safe removal of any benign bumps or lumps found in your genital area is by seeking professional help, such as MH Clinics.

While it can be awkward, Matthew says that “from a medical perspective, these consultations are very routine” and “once the conversation starts, most patients quickly realise that it’s a straightforward medical discussion with a focus on identifying what the condition is, explaining whether it is normal or harmless and discussing whether treatment is needed or desired.”
